The Shyness Canopy
Influenced by forest canopy dynamics, this sculptural seat is additive-manufactured using upcycled rPETG. Grounded in a zero-waste ethos, its structural integrity arises from complex spatial geometry.
Overview
The Creative Methodology
Crown Shyness as Design Logic
Inspired by crown shyness, the natural phenomenon in which neighboring tree canopies grow close without touching, the design translates this spatial behavior into a seating surface composed of separated modules. Rather than imitating the appearance of a tree, The Shyness Canopy interprets the underlying logic of growth, distance and coexistence as a functional piece of furniture.
Materiality and Eco Innovation
Engineered through a circular approach, The Shyness Canopy is produced using upcycled rPETG and additive manufacturing. Its open geometry, controlled wall thickness and sparse internal structure reduce unnecessary material while maintaining structural performance. The design has been physically tested to support a 100 kg load, demonstrating that material efficiency and structural strength can coexist within its lightweight sculptural form.

From Canopy to Structure
The branching base extends the same natural logic beneath the seating surface. Its geometry gradually expands upward, connecting a compact footprint with the wider canopy above. Digital modeling allows the proportions, openings and transitions to be controlled as one continuous system, balancing structural function with the sculptural character of the object.
A New Era of Distributed Fabrication
The Shyness Canopy is conceived not only as a finished object, but also as a transferable digital blueprint. The Full Scale Edition, 310 × 310 × 570 mm, can be produced by Cornu Design or fabricated closer to its final destination through suitable local manufacturing partners. The Compact Digital Edition, 250 × 250 × 500 mm, extends this idea further by making the design accessible for smaller scale and even home based additive manufacturing. By allowing the design to travel as digital data before becoming a physical object, the project explores an alternative to the centralized production and long distance transportation of finished furniture.

A SCULPTURAL SEAT DRAWN FROM NATURE'S DESIGN

Produced from upcycled rPETG through additive manufacturing, The Shyness Canopy combines material efficiency with decentralized production. While the Full Scale Edition is produced and delivered by Cornu Design, the Compact Digital Edition exists as a digital blueprint that can be fabricated locally or at home. By sending the design as data instead of shipping the finished object, it eliminates long distance furniture transport and reduces packaging and logistics.

Designer's Note
The Shyness Canopy began with a small moment of curiosity about how trees can grow so close without ever touching. I loved the quiet beauty of that relationship and wanted to turn it into something we could live with. For me, this piece is a reminder that design can begin simply by noticing nature a little more closely.
